Wild buckwheat is any plant in the genus Eriogonum, a group of roughly 250 species native to North America and concentrated in the dry West. It is not the same plant as the buckwheat whose grain is milled into flour: that crop is Fagopyrum esculentum, an unrelated species from Asia, and the two share a common name rather than a family. A wild buckwheat is grown for its place on a hillside or in a dry garden bed, not for a harvest.
A wild buckwheat is a member of Eriogonum, placed in the buckwheat family, Polygonaceae. The genus is almost entirely North American, with the greatest number of species in California, the Great Basin and the desert Southwest. Growth forms range from low mats a few centimeters high to rounded shrubs and, in a few species, small trees. Flowers are typically tiny and densely clustered, and the clusters are what a passerby actually notices.
The distinction matters more than it sounds. A hiker who learns one *Eriogonum* can usually recognize the next, because the genus repeats a small set of structures with unusual consistency. What the record supports
The edible grain called buckwheat belongs to Fagopyrum esculentum, a crop domesticated in Asia and grown in cooler, moister regions. It is a dicot, not a grass, but it is not an Eriogonum. The two plants differ in origin, in habitat and in use. No Eriogonum species is a grain crop, and the flour in a pantry has no connection to the shrubs on a sagebrush slope. The shared English name is a historical accident of resemblance, not a botanical relationship. Identification rests on three features, taken together: the involucre, the leaves, and the overall arrangement of the flower clusters. The involucre is the key structure and the one that separates Eriogonum from its relatives. It is a small cup, often bell-shaped or urn-shaped, that holds a cluster of tiny flowers. In most species the involucre is visibly distinct, with a defined rim, and it may have a few teeth or lobes. Related genera in Polygonaceae lack this cup, or present it in a different form. Once a hiker learns to look for the involucre, the genus becomes far easier to sort from the plants around it. Leaves are usually basal or concentrated near the base of the plant, at least on the flowering stems. Many species have leaves covered with dense white or silvery hairs, which give the foliage a gray or woolly appearance and reflect the sunlight of dry country. Leaf shape varies widely, from round to narrow and strap-like, and leaf margins may be smooth or wavy. The leaves often wither or drop by the time flowers peak, so a plant in full bloom may show mostly stems. Flower clusters sit above the leaves, usually in branched arrangements at the top of the stems. Colors run from white and cream through yellow, pink and deep red. The clusters may be tight balls, flat-topped heads or loose sprays. Season matters too: many wild buckwheats bloom in summer and continue into fall, when few other shrubs in the same habitat are flowering. A late-summer shrub covered with insects on a dry slope is a reasonable candidate for the genus. A useful habit is to photograph three things at once: a whole plant in its setting, a close view of one flower cluster showing the involucre, and a leaf. Names can be checked later against a regional flora or a native plant society's list. Habitat narrows the possibilities further, since many species are restricted to particular soils, elevations or rock types. For a small dry garden, the practical choice is a species native to the gardener's own region and suited to the site's soil and summer water regime. Local species are already adapted to the local rainfall pattern, the local heat and the local frost dates, and they support the insects that share that range. Among the widely planted options, sulfur buckwheat, Eriogonum umbellatum, is a common starting point. It is variable across its range, generally low and mounding, with yellow flower clusters that age toward orange or rust. It tolerates cold and lean soil and has proven manageable in cultivation across much of the West. California buckwheat, Eriogonum fasciculatum, is a shrubby species of lower and warmer country, with pinkish-white clusters and a long bloom. Saint Catherine's lace, Eriogonum giganteum, is larger, a shrub or small tree from the Channel Islands, and it needs more room than a small bed allows. A gardener choosing among these should match the plant to the site rather than to a photograph. A small bed in a cold interior valley and a small bed on a warm coastal slope call for different species. Seed is the usual route into the genus, and germination is often slow and irregular, with some species needing cold or light to break dormancy. Planting in fall, when the soil is warm and the rains are coming, gives a young plant its best chance. The first summer is the critical one, and a new buckwheat usually wants less water than a gardener's instinct suggests, delivered deeply and infrequently rather than often and lightly. Wild buckwheats are late-season nectar sources, and that timing is their main ecological value in the dry West. When many spring wildflowers have finished, buckwheat clusters are still producing nectar and pollen through the hottest weeks and into autumn. A single flowering shrub can draw a mixed crowd: native bees, honey bees, small butterflies, and in some settings hummingbirds. The insects that depend on this late resource include species whose adult flight periods fall in midsummer and fall, when alternatives are scarce. Gardeners who plant buckwheat often report that the shrub becomes the busiest plant in the bed by August. This is also why the genus appears so often in native plant and pollinator planting guides, and why the plants are described in the third person in the literature of the societies that study them. The value is not ornamental alone; it is a function of bloom time in a season when the landscape offers little else. Pruning is light and infrequent. Many wild buckwheats resent hard cutting into old wood, so the aim is to shape rather than to renovate. Removing spent flower clusters after bloom can keep a plant tidy and may encourage a second flush in some species. A light trim of the outer growth in late winter or early spring, before new growth begins, helps maintain density without exposing bare stems. Watering should follow the plant's origin. Species from summer-dry country generally prefer no summer water once established, or only occasional deep irrigation in extreme heat. Soil should drain freely; most of the genus fails in heavy, wet ground. Mulch of gravel or coarse material suits them better than rich compost, which holds moisture against the crown. Beginners have several reliable routes. Regional floras and state native plant society websites publish species lists by county and habitat.
