How we weigh evidence
Lincoln & Belief begins with a question, then moves to a source, an observation, an interpretation, and an explicit boundary. The sequence is simple enough for a classroom and strict enough to expose a weak quotation.
Primary manuscripts, official records, accountable transcriptions, contemporary reports, later recollections, and modern scholarship appear in separate roles. A source note records the repository, identifier, retrieval date, rights status, and review state.
Read the wording with its date, audience, and transmission history in view.
What the record supports
Every substantive page carries a revision date and a route back to the document index. When a source cannot be verified, the quotation is omitted and the page uses a cautious summary instead.
Observation
The useful claim is the one that remains attached to a named document and a visible source route.
What it does not establish
A document can reveal public wording, a stated purpose, or a transmission history. It cannot automatically disclose a complete private theology, settle every later dispute, or turn an uncertain recollection into a signed fact.
