The Research Desk is the byline used for the publication's source-led editorial work. It describes a method and a review route, not a fictional staff biography or a claim of personal access to the historical record.
Desk work includes finding item-level records, comparing transcriptions, checking dates and document genres, recording rights notes, and revising pages when a source route changes. Each pass asks whether a reader can follow the claim back to an accountable record.
The byline is attached to the methodology, editorial policy, and substantive readings so readers can see how a claim moved from source to page. Questions and corrections belong on the contact route. The desk is a publishing role, not a substitute for the repositories it cites.
